About the wod
Background: This workout is dedicated to Major Apollo Miguel Rezk, born on September 2, 1918 in Rio de Janeiro, son of Dr. Miguel Jorge Rezk, doctor, dentist, and pharmacist, and Mrs. Suraya Mussalli Rezk, both immigrants, he from Lebanon, and she from Syria.
Major Apollo studied at Colégio Pedro II, where he graduated in 1935. His ideal was a military career, but his dream was frustrated when he failed the health exam for the Military school in Realengo. He then entered the Higher School of Commerce, where he graduated as an Accountant. Later, he completed the course in Economic Sciences. In 1939, he was declared an Aspiring Officer of the Infantry Weapon, by the CPOR / RJ. With Brazil’s entry into World War II, Lt Apollo was called up for active service, embarking for Italy, incorporated into the Sampaio Regiment, in the 2nd Echelon of the FEB, now as 1st Lieutenant.
On December 12, 1944, in Monte Castelo, commanding his platoon, Lt Apollo conquered an important German position, after a violent battle. For the bravery shown in this action, Lt Apollo was awarded the “Silver Star” Medal by the American high command.
However, Lt Apollo would once again demonstrate its courage, determination and detachment when, on February 24, 1945, it conquered La Serra, at the head of its platoon, crossing an extensive minefield and under heavy enemy resistance. Wounded and in a vulnerable position, he managed to withstand the counterattacks of the Germans and, despite the enemy firepower, managed to repel them and still inflict severe casualties on them.
He was awarded the Campaign Medal, 1st Class Combat Cross, Brazilian Blood Medal and War Medal, from the Brazilian Government. As a result of his outstanding action in the Battle of La Serra, Lt Apollo received the “Cross of Outstanding Service” Medal from the United States Government, considered one of the most important American decorations.
After the end of the war, Lt. Apollo continued his military career, being promoted to Captain on September 3, 1951. He married Mrs. Ivette Antunes Rezk, whose union he had two children: Nelson and Nádia. In addition to the Sampaio Regiment, he served in the Battalion of Guards, when, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Panteon de Caxias, in 1949, he presented the Guard of the then Ministry of War to the President of the Republic, Gen Eurico Gaspar Dutra. He also served in Curitiba as Assistant to Gen Mário Perdigão.
In 1957, he was retired to the rank of Major. He passed away on January 21, 1999 at 80 years old.
The WOD was designed by Coach Paulo Vitor da Silva Duque of the Duque Fitness Academy @duque_fitness (Miracema, RJ, Brazil), where the workout was first performed on July 3, 2021.
