This Firefighter Hero WOD is dedicated to Robert Minara, FDNY, Ladder 25, who was killed on September 11, 2001.

Firefighter Robert Minara, a Vietnam Veteran, was among the 343 members of the FDNY to lose their lives in the World Trade Center terrorist attack. In upstate Carmel, Putnam County, Minara was remembered at services at St. James the Apostle Church. "Robert," the Rev. Joseph Faraone told more than 1,800 mourners, "gave us a glimpse of heaven.

"Former Deputy Mayor John Dyson hailed Minara and other firefighters for rescuing 25,000 people from the World Trade Center complex. "We can find some consolation because no one died in vain that day," Dyson said. "They set an example for all the world to follow.

"Firefighter Michael Schnugg referred to Minara's tour of duty in Vietnam with the Navy before joining the Fire Department in the late 1970s. He said Minara went back to John Jay College to learn fire science and graduated at the top of his class. He was a "friend and a father figure in the firehouse," but devoted his life to his family, Schnugg said. "Not a tour went by without him mentioning his family."

Minara leaves his wife, Paula, two sons from his first marriage and a stepson and daughter from his second marriage.
