  • For Time
  • 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 reps of:
  • Deadlifts (225/155 lb)
  • Toes-to-Bars
  • 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 reps of:
  • Power Cleans (155/105 lb)
  • Bench Presses (155/105 lb)

With a running clock, complete the prescribed work in the order written as fast as possible (“For Time“). Athlete will start with 10 Deadlifts and 10 Toes-to-Bars, 9 reps each, then will work their way down to 1 Deadlift and 1 Toes-to-Bar. Directly after the prescribed reps for the first couplet, athlete will then proceed to 1 Power Clean and 1 Bench Press, 2 reps each, all the way up to 10 Power Cleans and 10 Bench Presses.

Score is the time on the clock when the last round of the Bench Presses is completed.

Background: This Memorial WOD is created in honor of Riley Howell, a student of the University of North Carolina Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, who was killed while tackling an active shooter on the campus of UNC Charlotte on April 30, 2019.

Riley was widely credited by students and responding law enforcement for saving lives by preventing the shooter from continuing to fire. Despite being shot multiple times while charging the shooter, Riley continued his attack, eventually tackling the shooter and preventing him from firing any more shots until law enforcement arrived.

We found this workout posted to the Facebook page of Riley’s home affiliate, CrossFit Asheville @crossfitasheville (Asheville, NC, USA), who did a fundraiser WOD to raise money for the Riley Howell Foundation.

After reaching out to CrossFit Asheville, we learned that “Riley 21” was created as a collaboration between head coach and programmer, Marc Mazza, and Riley’s long-term girlfriend Lauren Westmoreland.

Marc, who was also friends with Riley, told us that, with the help of Lauren, they chose Riley’s favorite movements and created a workout “on the shorter and intense side”.
