About the wod
Nicole, a single mother of three, respected wildlife biologist and certified wildland firefighter, was participating in the burn operation when she was found deceased, according to a spokesperson for the Fort Jackson base.
This workout was created by Coach Rick Ellis @cf_rick, who was also a close friend of Nicole.
In an email with WODwell, Rick confirmed that Nicole was a long-time member of the former TCB CrossFit (Fort Jackson, South Carolina, USA) (where Rick coached) and was a staple WOD partner. Rick writes:
"Nicole was a great friend to everyone and will be missed. She really enjoyed former TCB CrossFit's old WODs from up on the hill when there's a lot of kettlebell swings and running, and was always great at situps and swimming in a pool."
Rick also explained that 'ratchet' was a reference to an ongoing inside joke. As the story goes "the name was an ongoing joke between Nicole, Rick's wife, Marti, [and two other TCB members] Tawanna Dennis, and Diana Primos trying to decide which of the four had the most ratcheted gym hair."
Rick writes that this workout was created and performed shortly after Nicole's passing. The 5/22/19 designates the day of her passing and the 4 (400m run and 400m swim) is for her and her 3 boys. The movements were all her favorites.
