About the wod
Background: This workout is dedicated to Brian Lavigne who was killed on January 11, 2021 and Brandon Stalker who was killed on January 18, 2021.
Master Corporal Brian Lavigne was killed when his patrol car was intentionally rammed by another vehicle on West Lumsden Road, near South King’s Avenue, in Brandon.
Deputies had responded to an apartment complex nearby after a man started throwing furniture and clothing off his balcony. A short time later, the man disrobed and started throwing food at neighbors. The man attacked responding deputies, striking one of them multiple times in the head. Attempts to stop the attack with electric control weapons failed. The subject broke free, got into a car, and drove through a closed gate.
The man intentionally drove across multiple lanes of traffic and struck Corporal Lavigne’s patrol car on the driver’s door at a high rate of speed. Deputies were unable to free Corporal Lavigne, and he had to be extricated by rescue units. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Corporal LaVigne had served with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for thirty years and was killed the day before his last scheduled shift before retirement. He is survived by his wife and two children. He previously served with the Largo Police Department prior to joining the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Police Officer Brandon Stalker was shot and killed during a barricade involving an arson suspect. On January 18, 2021, at approximately 2:20 am the front doors of the historic Rosary Cathedral had been set on fire and racial statements were spray painted onto the walls. At approximately 3:30 pm officers spotted the suspect near his house in the 2300 block of Fulton Street and attempted to talk to him. The man drew a handgun and ran into a home where he barricaded himself inside.
The department’s SWAT team responded to the scene and, after negotiations failed, fired a chemical irritant into the home in an attempt to force him outside. The man emerged from the home holding two handguns and opened fire. Officer Stalker, who was on a perimeter position, was struck in the head and fatally wounded.
Officer Stalker had served with the Toledo Police Department for 2-1/2 years. He is survived by his two children and fiancée.
The workout was designed by Coach Dan Fry of CrossFit Superfly @crossfitsuperfly (Mason, OH, USA) after their stories struck home for him being a police officer himself.
I have served my community for 15 years and have 4 young children…As a CrossFit coach, I have been hosting “Saturdays are for the heroes” every saturday since 9/11/20 in an effort to raise money for public safety and millitary personnel…These two deaths inspired me to create my own workouts in their memory and donate all the proceeds from their memorial workout to their individual memorial funds.
