In 2002, Andrew entered the Canadian Forces and joined 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in 2003. In 2006, he applied and was selected into the Canadian Special Operations Regiment. Andrew has served three tours in Afghanistan, one tour in Africa, and was currently deployed in Iraq as a Special Operator.
Andrew lived the warrior mentality and strived to be the best at whatever he chose to do. He lived and breathed the military, proudly serving Canada. Drew’s determination was instilled in those around him. We know that Drew’s dedication, qualities, inspiration, and strength will carry on in his memory. Drew was an amazing and accomplished human being, a true friend, a mentor, and a hero.
A member of CrossFit Exhilarate (Ontario, Canada), who wishes to remain anonymous, who was a close friend of Drew's created the workout in his memory. The pair first did the workout on November 10, 2017, during a 24 hour Hero WOD marathon.
According to the creator: "This started with us doing our favorite hero wod ("Morrison") every Friday (before pizza night started ). Because we did it so often it started to get easy, so we added in a run, and then the vest. Drew wore his full vest, I wore his plate carriers.
For some sick reason, Drew loved leg day. So after he was gone, a few of us decided to get together to do this workout that drew and I did every Friday. At that time, we added the buy-in air squats just because. We wore the vest for the whole workout [until the] deadlifts...we took the vest off that part.
They called the workout "Batman" because Drew jokingly called himself "The Batman." [So] "it seemed like the obvious choice."
