Background: This workout is dedicated to CrossFit Games volunteer and judge Brandon Abo who passed away on September 19, 2020, while surfing in his hometown of Huntington Beach, California. He was a veteran volunteer for the CrossFit Games in Carson and Regionals events held in California. Born on July 11, 1974, he passed away at 46-years old.

From Morning Chalk Up: “Abo leaves behind a son, Solomon, who he affectionately called Solo due to his love of Star Wars. Abo was also an avid surfer who always found time to hit the waves along the California coastline, he was a special education teacher who just recently graduated with his Masters of Arts in Teaching in 2020 from the University of Southern California.

“He started off as part of the Rogue crew at the California Regionals and Games before moving onto the floor to judge at the 2018 West Regionals at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. His drive to volunteer extended outside of CrossFit as he served as a foster family for numerous dogs through Cavalier Rescue.

“After the passing of his mother, he continued her work by delivering lunches and checking on the elderly throughout the Los Angeles area.

“Adrian Bozman @apbozman, CrossFit Games Head Judge said, “I’m very saddened to hear of Brandon’s passing. Brandon was part of a small group of dedicated judges and volunteers you could count on year after year. He was always a great asset to the team, hardworking and adaptable. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.””

We first found the workout posted by former CrossFit Games athlete Jamie Joyce @jamiejoyce2, who informed us it was designed by her friend Adan Penuelas @ayypee3.

After reaching out to Adan, he replied to us that Abo was a great friend and even better human and member of the CrossFit community. They first met at LAX CrossFit @laxcrossfit (Hawthorne, CA, USA) where they were members first then coaches.

The movements Adan chose were some of Abo’s favorites. He had a background in Olympic lifting and he also enjoyed challenging gymnastics movements.

The rep scheme signifies:
– 7-11-75 reps for his birthday on July 11, 1974
– 9-19-20 reps for the date when Abo passed away on September 19, 2020
– 47 burpees for his age, plus 1 for his son

Adan shared, “The biggest piece I want to emphasize is the Burpee buy out. He was 46 when he passed but he left behind a little guy who he loved so much, Solomon. That’s where the 47th rep comes in, that last rep is for him. I hope one day Solomon can look back at all the good his dad did in the community and can remember him as a great friend, coach, and dad.”
