The 2015 CrossFit Games Championships were the final stage of the ninth annual CrossFit Games and were held on July 21–26, 2015 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Individual athletes performed 13 workouts over the course of the weekend.
First-time elements in 2015 included open-ocean paddleboard racing and peg board climbing. The peg board proved to be particularly daunting: In a notorious WOD called “Pedal to the Metal 1” only three women (Margaux Alvarez, Amanda Goodman and Kari Pearce) completed all of the peg board ascents. And only seventeen men were able to do the same.
Many athletes were later able to redeem themselves: Dave Castro (CrossFit Games director) put the peg board back into the competition the following year (in the 2016 CrossFit Games) in a workout called “Redemption.” “Time to see who learned from last year… and who didn’t,” Castro wrote.
2015 also marked the start of the Teenage Division for athletes 14-17 years old and a scaled option for the CrossFit Open.
The 2015 men’s competition was won by Ben Smith (a Games competitor every year since 2009), the women’s by Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir, and the Affiliate Cup was awarded to CrossFit Mayhem Freedom.
